April 12, 2024Riga, Latvia; The One with the Buildings Part 2
April 22, 2024Riga is the capital, and largest city, of Latvia. Aside from being renowned for its art-nouveau examples, Riga also hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 2003.
And, this place is...?
Riga; a place I’d never even heard of until a friend and I searched Lastminute.com for cheap getaways. Booking on a whim, we arranged a girl’s trip. Countdown, on!
For the basic holiday package, we paid less than £300 in total for 4 days (flights, hand luggage only, transfers, hotel, and breakfast). Additionally, there was £54 spent on airport parking. Even with the local food and drinks added on as we wandered, this was still an inexpensive trip.
Hotel OK was more than okay! In a quiet neighbourhood, we enjoyed our continental breakfasts outside on the terrace every morning. It is set away from the Old Town (30min walk) but there are buses on the adjacent road and the tram system is simple enough to use. I believe taxis are cheap (under £5), though we walked the majority of the time.

As a solo traveller, I've found Wizzair and Ryanair inexpensive – prices in April 2024 as low as £24 return from the UK when comparing on Skyscanner.
Be sure to shop around for the best deals, I also cross checked booking.com with the prices directly from hotels. Sometimes, apartments work out as cheaper options. Being flexible with dates can save a small fortune. I've used a combination of apartments and hostels to reduce costs; rough it for a few days, then live it up with a nice bathroom and a washing machine!
Purchasing tickets prior to boarding is the key to a streamlined Public Transport experience, you’ll easily locate vending machines throughout the City. Once you get your head around jumping off a bus directly in to the road, everything is easy. Both trams and buses were regular though be sure to check how late they run if you plan on partying the night away.
