More Places of Interest
Kronvalda Park is a beautiful green space in Riga that was often wandered back to. Whether you want a picnic in the park, somewhere to take the kids, or a nice place for a coffee and stroll, this is recommended. Statues, fountains, and even a Love Bridge covered in padlocks, there's a lot to see.
There are countless statues (old and new) throughout Riga but rather than listing them here, I implore you to hunt them out for yourselves and have fun in doing so. That being said, I'm still loving the blue snail in Kronvalda Park, it’s quirky presence makes me smile.
Tejo Tea House is still a favourite haunt, discovered after walking alongside the canal. Offering good food, great tea, and an unusual environment, this deserves a visit.
Gallery
At the other end of the park, you can find the White House; the Latvian National Opera House. If you can’t make a show, at least admire the exterior.
Another activity I'm glad to have undertaken was the Alternative Walking Tour. A stark reality laid bare, facing the facts with a sharp talking guide, the reality of history was brought home. Viewing old buildings scarred with bullet wounds, and discussing the holocaust, this tour may not be for everyone but is certainly an eyeopener. If this isn’t quite your style, there is a nicer tour that focuses on the quaint Old Town and see the pretty sights. Please note, cash tips are gratefully received on the Free Tours.
There are often local markets on that have an interesting array of wares. The Riga Central Market is an intriguing bazaar, constructed of old German Zeppelin hangars, and open daily.
