Things of Interest
Having visited Bremen previously, I was intrigued to recognise their stacked animal statue in Riga. It turns out they are twinned and Bremen gifted its sister city the famous statue consisting of a donkey, dog, cat, and cockerel. If you haven’t heard the Brothers Grimm fairytale, take a look here.
If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you’ll fit right in here as Riga appears to have a slight obsession. Keep your eyes peeled for subtle nods with statues and details, but don’t forget to check out the Sherlock Holmes birthday celebrations if you’re in town on the 8th January.
Gallery
The Nativity of Christ Orthodox Church is a stunning piece of architecture that survived the Soviet era as a planetarium and a café. It is now back in use as a sacred Orthodox site, its golden domes standing proud.
The details on some of the buildings are worthy of a mention, we spent hours gazing up at quirky buildings in admiration. Art Nouveau has always been a movement I wish I knew more about and Riga reignited my interest. Looking back, I wish I’d taken more pictures of the examples I saw though I suspect I would’ve taken thousands… Riga Art Nouveau Centre is the only museum in the Baltics dedicated to Art Nouveau heritage.
Talking of architecture, The Three Brothers deserve a mention here as the oldest living complex in Riga, dating from the 15th-17th centuries.
