Cluj-Napoca; Unchartered Territory Part 4 (the Sinaia edit)
May 28, 2024Bergamo, Italy; The City of Two Halves Part 1
July 8, 2024Cluj-Napoca is often referred to as the "Heart of Transylvania" but this is because of its historical and economical significance, rather than its geographical location.
The Final Stay
Coming back to Cluj-Napoca, I’d booked a different apartment. This time a short walk from the train station and almost adjacent to Cluj Football Stadium. The apartment was quirky, even sporting a retro radio, but it was more than sufficient and would be perfect if you’re there for match day.
Modern shower, massive bed, dining table and even a sofa, meant I had more than ample creature comforts.
After taking a walk, I noticed that many a fan stopped to have a picture taken next to the mural. Obviously I also had to get some pictures of this mural, though no selfies for me.

The weather was lovely which meant I walked everywhere. Eventually rounding back to the Gothic Biserica Sfântul Mihail in Piața Unirii, I found a seat at Nuka Bistro. Red wine, chicken șnițel, and creamy mash went down a treat.
Sat with a great view of the church, I can only assume I was sat next to someone famous – the gentleman to my left was asked for a photo from several teenagers on multiple occasions. Regretting not asking who he was now! All in, dinner and wine cost 72 lei - £12.56.
After a lay in, I spent the next day exploring Iulius Park where I considered hiring a car-boat before heading in to Iulius Mall.
Iulius Mall is a large, modern space with interesting exhibit spaces located at various points throughout. Despite not shopping, I still enjoyed visiting it. There was a display of old vehicles that went into detail about electric vehicles and environmental impacts.

Most of my snacks came from local stores on this visit so I won’t list off everything. All I can say is, try as many different foods as possible, Romania is underrated! My final meal was eaten in Sorriso Bistro before I made my way to the airport – an understated Italian where a 3-course meal cost 93 lei - £16.03.
At the airport I watched an amazing stunt plane practising his moves; killing the engine and plummeting down, before restarting and dramatically swooping back up like a rocket. Once that had ceased to entertain me, I drank copious amounts of espresso while marvelling at the fact they had a book vending machine. I've had worse waits for flights!
Once again, Romania didn’t disappoint. Though I enjoyed Cluj-Napoca, I’d like to see more of Sinaia so perhaps that will feature in my travels again. Until next time, travel well!
