September 22, 2023Sibiu is a city in Transylvania, central Romania. It’s known for Germanic architecture in its old town, the legacy of 12th-century Saxon settlers.
Arriving in Sibiu, Romania, I dropped my backpack at Casa Spatar and set out to explore this enchanting city. My first stop was Biserica Ortodoxa Sfantul Nicolae, a striking Orthodox church that greeted me with its timeless beauty. But, true to my wanderlust spirit, I couldn't resist the urge to dive deeper into the heart of Sibiu.
Hungry for an authentic Romanian experience, I ventured back into town to order a bowl of ciorba de burta, a traditional tripe soup. As I savoured each spoonful, I couldn't help but marvel at the unique blend of flavours.
Thirsty for more, I made my way to a charming bar in Piata Mica, where I indulged in a large glass of traditional Transylvanian wine. My Romanian pronunciations might have been far from perfect, but the locals appreciated my efforts, and friendly smiles were exchanged as we bridged the language gap.
Sibiu is a city that captivates from every angle. Its architectural wonders range from the whimsical 'houses with eyes' to the mysterious Bridge of Lies, known as 'podul minciunilor.' This legendary bridge is immersed in folklore, boasting a multitude of tales that enshroud it in mystery. I found myself pondering which narrative held the essence of reality.
One architectural gem that demands attention is the Catedrala Evanghelica CA Sfanta Maria, a stunning 14th-century church that exudes timeless grace and spirituality.
Exploring further, I discovered the Turnul Dulgherilor and Turnul Olarilor, ancient defence towers that stand as proud sentinels of Sibiu's rich history. Informative panels throughout these robust structures offered glimpses into their storied past.
I had no specific itinerary in mind, preferring to let my curiosity guide me through the labyrinthine streets and picturesque squares of Sibiu. I meandered through charming side streets, explored hidden parks, and chatted with friendly locals. This immersive approach allowed me to experience Sibiu less as a tourist and more as a temporary resident, revealing hidden gems beyond the well-known attractions.
Sibiu has something to offer every traveller's palate, whether you crave a champagne breakfast or prefer to sip on local wines. Its vibrant arts scene and historic architecture blend seamlessly, providing a captivating backdrop to your exploration. In Sibiu, every corner holds a new adventure waiting to be discovered.
