Nestled in the heart of Transylvania, the enchanting city of Brasov beckons with its picturesque beauty and rich history. While it might not be the Hollywood you're thinking of, this Romanian gem has its own cinematic allure. Join me on a journey through Brasov, where you'll discover breathtaking viewpoints, the haunting Black Church, and tasty local treats.
Hollywood charm
As you approach Brasov, an unexpected surprise awaits – a set of iconic Hollywood-style letters perched on the hillside, overlooking the city. These letters spell "BRASOV" and create a picture-perfect opportunity against the backdrop of the cityscape. This whimsical touch adds a touch of glamour to this charming Transylvanian town. Brasov's historic centre, renowned as one of the best-preserved in Europe, boasts cobblestone streets and colourful Baroque buildings that exude old-world charm. The presence of the Hollywood-style letters in this historic setting further enhances its allure, offering a unique blend of the contemporary and the classic
Natural Beauty
Head to Parc sub Tampa to kickstart your journey to the Tampa Mountain viewpoint, offering a panoramic vista that will leave you breathless. The short hike or cable car ride to the summit is undoubtedly worth it. For an optimal experience, consider bringing a torch and hiking as early as possible to avoid crowds. Also, if you're travelling with children, certain parts of the trail can be rather steep which makes it unsuitable for prams. Upon reaching the summit, your efforts will be rewarded with a stunning view of Brasov and the surrounding Carpathian Mountains. It's the perfect location to capture the essence of this medieval city. The Hollywood-style letters are huge up close and add to the enchantment. Additionally, Brasov has gained recognition as a filming location. Discover more about its cinematic connections here; IMDB.
History
Once you have descended from the Tampa Mountain, be sure to visit the enigmatic Black Church, a Gothic marvel that stands as one of the largest Lutheran churches in Europe. Its name originates from the darkened appearance of its walls due to a fire in the 17th century. Restoration took a century to complete. Inside, you'll find an exquisite collection of Anatolian carpets and an impressive 4,000-pipe organ.
Local Food
No visit to Brasov is complete without savouring the local delicacies. I arrived a tad too late for the cream of the crop, so settled for a covrigi as big as my thigh from Petru. These delectable pretzels are a beloved snack for both residents and visitors. They come in various flavours, from the classic salted variety to sweet cinnamon. Be sure to try one (or a few) while strolling through the charming streets of Brasov, or swing by the market for some local, fresh produce.
Other Points of Interest
The city is home to one of the narrowest streets in Europe, Strada Sforii (Rope Street), measuring just 1.32 meters wide. Originally created as a passage for firefighters, this charming alleyway now serves as a unique tourist attraction, providing a glimpse into Brasov's history and offering an ideal backdrop for impromptu photoshoots.
The city's medieval fortifications, including imposing walls and defensive towers, still stand today, offering an insight in to the rich history of the area. Brasov is often referred to as "Kronstadt" in German, which translates to “Crown City.” This name possibly derives from the old coat of arms of the city. Interestingly, in the Middle Ages, Brasov was known by multiple names simultaneously: Kronstadt, Corona, and Brassovia. Which of these is your favourite?
Brasov, with its blend of history, culture, and scenic beauty, invites you to explore its unique charm. Whether you're snapping photos with Hollywood-style letters, gazing out from the Tampa Mountain viewpoint, admiring the Black Church, or savouring covrigi, this city promises an unforgettable experience.
